How to Tell the Best Video Story Ever

I believe the best stories are told by people. People using their own words to explain their own experiences. Whether it’s a story about the business they work for or a program they are a part of or a moment they witnessed – people tell their story better than a narrator. Now, believe me, it’s a rare occasion to have a corporate client say “do it however you like, I trust you”. But sometimes they actually do, and when they do, it feels like Christmas morning. I can’t wait to...

New Year Resolutions

'Tis the season to make your personal resolutions for the new year: work out more, eat better, meditate, travel... the dream list can be endless. Maybe, this year, you need a dream list for your business, too. I read on the internet that in 2017, 68% of all internet traffic will be generated by Wi-Fi & mobile devices. WOW. 68%. Have you looked at your web site from your phone lately? How does it look? Is your business’s story effectively told? Maybe in 2017 you need a business resolution to tell your story… clearly and effectively – on all devices.<...

It’s the team that counts…

As I spend another Sunday afternoon with the NFL and my team, the Packers (yes, they are my team), I come to appreciate great teamwork. After a few disappointing weeks being a Green Bay fan, it was fantastic to see the guys working as a team. Things really clicking. Rogers leading his rag-tag offense - we even had a running game!  And the defense stepping up amidst early injuries (I think Matthews’ Read Article →

5 Tips on Shooting Good Video

The good news about the video production industry these days is that it has never been cheaper to get into the business.  Good quality, high-definition video cameras cost a fraction of what they did 10 years ago.  You can still spend tens of thousands of dollars on high-end, digital, 6K, cine-style cameras (without lens), but for a few thousand dollars one can produce a very nice full-frame image with a digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR).  In addition, reasonably priced support gear options for DSLRs have hit the market in the form of camera movement controls, monitors,...

FAQs, just the FAQs

It dawned on me the other day, that most first-time clients ask the same questions about video production. So I decided to answer those questions with my usual tongue in cheek (some may say sarcastic) style. I'll try to clearly sum up, in an understandable way, the 6 most popular video production questions Tweedee Productions gets about videos.

1.  I need a 2 minute video – what will it cost?

Video production pricing is based on all the ingredients we will need to put into your project. Basic videos include: planning; field production; graphic animation; editing;...

Entry into the field has never been more affordable. A few thousand dollars will get you a decent camera, support gear, lights and an editing system. Who’s Watching Online Video and When Are They Watching?

I’ve seen a few recent surveys and studies showcasing viewing habits for online videos.  Thought I’d share some of the highlights in my blog posting here.

For starters, it should come as no surprise that online viewing habits differ from younger and older viewers.  Younger people have grown up in world where YouTube has been around for most of their life and online videos are prevalent and commonplace.  In fact, a very high percentage (77%) of YouTube viewers are under the age of 35<...

YouTube Inspirations While Home with a Sick Kid

I need to keep this blog entry short as I'm writing it while my 9-year-old son is napping.  I'm home with him today because he's missing school due to a wicked case of the stomach flu.  We passed the time this morning watching classic "Tom & Jerry" cartoons (the new modern T&J toons just don't measure up), playing on his mini iPad, some coloring and drawing, and a little bit of reading.  But we also spent some time watching some of his favorite YouTube videos.  Now, the mind of...

Fixing the Leaks

Consider this a group therapy session. Golf legend Lee Trevino knew his way around a green and a good quote. So, when Packers fans all over the state collectively grasped their throats at the end of the NFC Championship game, the words of Trevino dropped into my mind like a well hit 7-iron. The golf great once said, "We all choke, and the man who says he doesn't choke is lying like hell. We all leak oil." This is from a guy who won the U.S. Open...

Count Your Blessings

It’s that time of year when we count our blessings. Of course, like many, my super-cool spouse and “family” are at the top of my list… but I’m often stunned by how fortunate I am to have a career where I can creatively express myself each day. I love telling stories about people – what they’ve accomplished, what they’ve overcome, how they help others. It’s very inspirational for me. Spending intimate hours with folks who open up and share a part of their lives...

What’s The Best Why to Tell a Visual Story? Robert Drew and Cinema Verite

Robert Drew passed away this past summer.  He was 90.  Why should people in our industry care about Robert Drew?  Because Drew was a documentary filmmaker and generally regarded as the father of American cinema verite.  He hated talking heads.  Not The Talking Heads, but talking-head interviews where all the viewer sees and hears is someone talking.  Drew made more than 100 films.  Perhaps his most well known film Read Article →

They’ll Watch the “Hole” Thing

Earlier this week, a friend of mine "liked" an Inc. article he had read on LinkedIn. It's called, "Storytelling Is Out: Why Storymaking Is the Future of Brand Marketing."   With a touch of sarcasm, I quickly shot my friend an email with the subject line, "Now What?" My point is so many people in our industry, including we here at Tweedee, talk about storytelling. We help other people tell their stories. But, once I read the article, my anxiety caused sarcasm disappeared. It's...

The Qualities of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Videos

I was challenged by one of my best friends Matt to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. His video featured his two adorable daughters all over him while he explained what he was doing and who was being challenged. After he finished his opening statements, his older daughter hands him a wastebasket full of water and he pours it over his head while his eyes squeezed shut. The water dumps out in all one roaring splash and immediately his older daughter off camera asks, "Good?" Matt tells me that it the challenge is now up to those who have been...

Why Tweedee Productions Is Business Award Winner

Professional achievement awards can be both rewarding and disappointing - you feel great when you win, lousy when you loose.  Today, I feel great because we won.

Tweedee Productions was recently honored with a Dane County Small Business Award presented through the University of Wisconsin School of Business.  While I have personally won several individual awards for various video productions as a TV news photographer and now for Tweedee Productions, this one is especially sweet.  Why?  Because it's an award for the company, not just me. The High Price of Low Quality Video

“As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind - every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.” - John Glenn

Although things worked out for astronaut John Glenn, I was reminded of his famous quote when I saw this posted the other day:

As consumers, all of us try to find the best value for the lowest price.  But at what point does the price become so low that the quality suffers?  Having a nicely produced video on your website is vital in...

Why We Donated The History of Camp Randall Videotapes to the University of Wisconsin

About 10 years ago Tweedee Productions produced a feature-length documentary called In the Red Zone, The History of Camp Randall.  We interviewed scores of former University of Wisconsin football players, coaches and fans.  We spent several fall Saturdays capturing the experience of attending a game at Camp Randall Stadium.  We also documented the construction of the new luxury suites, the new...

The Yellow King Has Nothing on the Camera Work

I'm a tv junkie. I got addicted early in life. I couldn't stay up late as a kid, so I learned to program the VCR so I could record "Saturday Night Live". That's when I found out that I still had a fever for appointment viewing and I was certain I could solve the murder of Laura Palmer with the...

How to Shoot Great Looking Video

I’m a big fan of the PBS TV show This Old House.  Being a bit of a do-it-yourselfer, I love to watch the pros on this show “do it right.”  In fact, in another life I think I would enjoy being a carpenter (except for the working outside in the winter part).

Create Gravity

Somebody once asked Robert Frost if his poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" was a contemplation on suicide. Frost, who was surrounded by loss, saw his father die when he was 11 then his mother at age 26. Of his six children, only two of them outlived the poet. Finally, he lost his wife when he was 64. Sometime before his wife passed away, he wrote this poem after staying up all night and watching the sun rise. In it, he contemplated the night and the choices made during a simple travel. When Frost was asked this question - "Is '...

We Need a Website Video

After folks decide they need a website video, the Pandora’s Box of video production is opened.  Here are some things to think about after you’ve made the decision to create video content for your website:

How to Be a Better Video Storyteller

WE ARE STORYTELLERS - one of the most over-used phrases in the video production business.  Many video production companies use it.  Heck, even Tweedee Productions does!  It's cute, catchy, homey, warm and fuzzy.  I believe many of us use it to perhaps make the video production process seem a little less intimidating, but instead more fluid, artistic and organic. ...

We sometimes have people tell us what budget they've established for their video project idea before they tell us about the idea itself.   Although we try to work with any size budget, this situation can be very challenging for us, because the client has already decided what they are willing to pay -- before they know how much it might actually cost.

Why Your Audience is Changing Seats

Best Buy reported a 14% slip in their shares during the 4th quarter of 2010. This is the difficult side effect to slumping sales. Primarily, their sales were paltry in television sets, movies and games, according to Forbes Magazine. This trend may be indicative how the market is shifting among all retailers. In 2010, television growth was at 18% while this year's numbers are trending towards a 4% growth (according to research firm DisplaySearch). A major cool down from hi def television enthusiasm has entered our culture.

Last night, I couldn't find a show on television to save my life....

“Don’t say the old lady screamed. Well, I took the plunge.  I made the leap.  I threw all common sense to the wind and got a smart phone.  A SMART PHONE!  It makes me feel smart just to say the name - Droid Eris.  "Why yes, I have the Droid Eris."   But, will it make me smarter?  Will I work and live smarter?  It's only A PHONE!   I don't need a smart phone.

In renewing our cell...

Video Art Emotional Brand Connecting the Dots

If you've never believed Emotional Branding is part of your company or your client's landscape, you're wrong. If there's an opinion of your service, product, business, etc. then there's an emotional awareness that can be labeled as Emotional Branding. What is the customer's perception? Like a piece of artwork, you view it and walk away with an interpretation. When I look at Bruce Charlesworth's new video installation at Madison's Museum of Contemporary Art, I can stare at it...

The Power of You

video storytelling is a powerful tool - but it becomes a super-power when great images are combined with great testimonials. have you ever noticed how powerful a commercial becomes when you see & hear a real person talking about a real thing? telling their real story? in their words? look at this Nike spot. simple concept. powerful images. all told by the dancer. never once does she mention Nike or her clothes & shoes... but the super powerful images combined with words makes it...

How to Shoot a Video

In an ideal world we'd like everyone to hire Tweedee Productions for all their video production needs.  That may have been more realistic a decade or two ago when video gear was more complex and expensive.  However, as video production gear continues to get cheaper and easier to use,  many companies are buying and operating their own video gear.  Even one-person shops are looking to save a few bucks by producing their own web video or video blog....

I’m Not Taking a Look at That Photograph

Gregg started that Photo-A-Day thing after he subconsciously heard me talk about it. I swear I was in his office talking about doing the "Photo-A-Day" thing for 2010 but he says he doesn't remember it. Either way, I'm glad both of us are doing it. Even if it was my idea to begin. You can view my Photo-A-Day on Facebook. Moving On.

Photo-A-Day

I've created a monster.  OK, I knew what I was getting into, sort of.  I did it anyway.  What was I thinking?  It was supposed to be simple.  The good thing is, I've managed to keep it that way and to have fun.

Using SEO Video to Increase Traffic to Your Website

For years, many companies have been using simple keywords as their main Search Engine Optimization (SEO) technique to increase website traffic and their rankings in search engine results.  But there’s been a lot of talk lately about how Google and other search engines are increasing their use of blended media types (articles, pictures, video, and other content) to provide more relevant search results.

The importance of video in those search engine algorithms is helping many websites that have video content increase their traffic and wind up on the first page of those search...

“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch!”

youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch

For me, part of getting into the Christmas spirit involves watching the animated Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I remember, as a kid, lying on our living room floor surrounded by my sister, brother, and parents as we all watched.  As an adult, I usually miss it when it airs on TV, but I make sure I take the time to revisit it sometime before Christmas. With the incredible computer-generated animation by the likes of Read Article →

Turkey Testicles Video Goes Viral

Tweedee Productions is currently riding one of those YouTube viral video phenomenons that you hear about.  By the time this blog entry is posted, we will probably crack the 1,000,000-view mark of a story about people eating a most unusual part of the traditional Thanksgiving bird. It all started innocently enough back in the fall of 2008.

We assigned Sandy Kowal and our good friend Carrie Cokins to do a simple little story about the annual Turkey Testicle Festival (see video below) in the great city of Huntley, Illinois. ...

Creating An Award Winning Video

Steve Donovan, Senior Editor>

I wanted to add onto Amy's blog entry about television on the computer. I, too, am watching my shows on the computer. I've been building a collection of movies from iTunes for a while. I noticed a few days ago that my living room and my office look a lot alike. They have seating to comfortably view the respective screens except the desk chair had to be moved for a proper unobstructed view of the computer. I'm interested...

Comedy Is Not Pretty

That's the title of a comedy album and television special from Steve Martin. He has this one line in the special where he says, "Hey Socrates, what is truth? Socrates, what's the nature of good? Socrates, what should I order? Socrates, what are you having? No one ever says, 'Socrates, that hemlock is poison!'"

Informing somebody of truth or facts are, many times, overlooked or assumed. I'm taking time now to let you in on a television secret. Comedy is not pretty. It's a difficult, ugly thing that's tough to master. How...

The Blog Police

When you read a blog post with a glowing review about a certain product or service, do you ever wonder if the blogger who posted that was getting paid by someone to provide that glowing review?  Well, that problem has actually become an epidemic on the web and it’s gotten so bad that the federal government has stepped in to provide some oversight.  When you’re on-line, it’s often very difficult to determine if the content (blogs, customer reviews, etc.) you are seeing is a paid endorsement or an independent review. ...

Get the Message

The other night at the dinner table I was thinking about noise. Basically, because there was a lot of it. Pretty typical for many families, right? Everybody wanted to say something, had to say something, or just wanted to hear themselves say something. (That's usually me.) And, everybody has their own style of getting their point across. Some of our kids yell to be heard, some never stop talking, some never stop butting in, and some pick their moments. It's a snapshot of the world we live in now.

Communication is constant - Facebook, Twitter,...

Go Team Go!

Hurray!  The football season is finally upon us!  I can smell the brats sizzling on the grill now!  Let the hitting begin! I love football and team sports in general.

I like to analyze why some teams are far superior than their competition.   To me if a team plays at a high level year after year it usually means that in addition to great players, they have a great management team.  There's more to it than just, "we score more points than the other guys, that'...

Life is good again. In the words of those musical maidens of the '80's, "Vacation...had to get away." Sometimes, you just have to step back from the table before you get too full. I've been wondering about something lately.  Help me out here.  Why is it that when the characters on a TV show order out Chinese food, invariably ALL of the characters eat with chopsticks?  Why is that?  It's pervasive - the prosecutors on Law and Order, the cops on Saving Grace, Jamie Kennedy on The Ghost Whisperer (watch for the "that's what she said" moment)....

Working Creative Backwards

I once asked a very eloquent friend, "What is your process in writing?" He told me, "I write down what I want the reader to experience or learn inside a circle. Then I play a bit of word association. I write a feeling or object that's closely related to that idea and draw a circle around it and connect the circles with a line directly to my main theme," his fingers drew circles and lines in the air, "When I run out of words that associate directly to that word, I start associating words with those other words....

Stolen Artwork & Being a Cat Thief

The Concert" by Jan Vermeer>

On St. Patrick's Day 1990, The Gardner Museum in Boston was robbed. Jan Vermeer's most famous piece (which isn't saying much since he has only 35 oil paintings in existence--pfft) titled "The Concert" was lifted in the middle of the night. To date, this piece has not been found and there is a $5,000,000 bounty for the rescue of this famous piece of artwork. Very few pieces of artwork of this caliber have been taken. Or have they? For every great piece of work, there are imitators. Seeing opportunities for...

How Do People Discover Video Online?

Blogs are actually one of the most popular ways to discover video on the web.  In fact, a recent study by TubeMogul found that 44% of all online video is viewed after initially being discovered through a blog.  The study also found that 45% of video views are the result of a direct navigation to a video site (i.e. going to YouTube and running a search or clicking around the featured or related videos).  So really, unless someone is specifically looking for your particular video, or...

Why Experience Is Important in Video Production

It seems like every other day we hear about a new video production company starting up.  Now, while many of these entrepreneurs are, no doubt, talented, hard working people, it's relatively easy to get in the game.  For a few thousand dollars anyone can buy the proper equipment to shoot and edit HD-quality video, and post it on the web where the whole world can watch it.

The deal is, I can go out and buy all the professional-quality woodworking tools that I can afford, but...

Choosing The Right Music

“Let’s use a punk rock song about sex & drugs to promote your company” was actually a successful pitch someone made to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Most television commercials rely on music to provide a little something extra and to set the tone for what you are seeing.  But in almost any video production (whether it’s a traditional corporate image video or the theme song that rolls during the opening credits of your favorite TV show) the music is often intended to affect the mood of the viewer.

That&rsquo...

Know the Messenger Before You Shoot Him

We ask a lot of questions at the beginning of a project. In my opinion, the best question to ask is "Who is going to see it?" I'm not just asking that to find out the demographics of the viewer. It's important to find out how the project is being delivered. Will it be viewed on broadcast television? Will it be shown at a dinner via DVD? Maybe Blu Ray? More importantly, if it's being delivered online, will it be Quicktime, Windows Media, Flash, etc...?

A reliable, clean delivery is very important to your...

Make Your Video Relevant

I'm thinking that about 130 years ago, in 1876, a bunch of guys (yes, "guys" since women probably weren't allowed to think about these things back then) were sitting around a coffee house talking about this new fangeled device called the "tel-lee-fone".  They were most likely complaining, "Why would I ever need one of those things?"  Or better yet, "If I feel like talkin' to someone, I'll just go over to their house and TALK TO THEM!"

My how things have changed.  Now, using a cheap, disposable cell...

Where does Superman change into his costume now that phone booths are obsolete???

We all know how much technology has changed our lives, but an emerging generation:

Has never used a rotary phone Has never had to get up from the sofa to change the TV channel Has never had their windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped by a service attendant at the gas station

This new generation is also not dependent on traditional forms of media which has led to a dramatic change in today’s media landscape. The print...
